Brass is ductile and malleable, making it very versatile when it comes to decorative use. Its main color is yellow, but if we age this metal it will take on a different color, brown, which can be better used for decorative elements.

How to get antique brass

To obtain this material we must age the brass that we have and want to use to decorate our home.

This process will give the brass an antique appearance without the use of chemicals or toxic substances. The process is known as oxidation and patination. This can be achieved with a chemical called iron nitrate or with a common household ingredient such as white vinegar.

After the process, our brass will have a darker color than brass that has not been aged. It will have a more brown color and can be useful for decorating some part of our home due to its antique appearance.

The steps to follow are:

1. Clean the object to be treated very well.
2. Mix one teaspoon of iron nitrate with half a litre of distilled water. Alternatively, use white vinegar instead of ferric nitrate.
3. Heat the object to be treated in the oven or with a hair dryer for a few minutes.
4. Using a brush, paint the object with the liquid solution that we have previously prepared. Use gloves to avoid burning ourselves with the object that we have heated in step 3.
5. Allow to dry. You can seal the object with a prepared wax paste that you can find at any hardware store.

This is how easy it is to obtain aged brass. With it, our decoration can go beyond time and achieve an antique appearance without the need to buy already aged brass.
