Furniture usually has a useful life, but we can always give it a facelift to extend that life. One of the most original ways to renew and give a second life to our furniture is to use brass coils or strips to give them a more modern touch. In this post we are going to show you how to turn an old piece of furniture into an original and modern design.
1. Clean Very good furniture
Antique furniture is often a little dirty or has small splinters. The first thing we should do is clean the furniture very well, removing all traces of dirt, dust, grease or small stains. If the furniture is quite old, the wood colour may be a little discoloured. Here we must decide whether we want to paint the furniture another colour or leave it in its original colour.
If you decide not to paint the wood, simply go to the step 4.
2. Prepare the furniture….. What do I have to do?
We must remove, if they have them, the handles and legs of the furniture, and cover with painter's tape those parts that we do not want to paint.
The first thing to decide is whether to sand the furniture. If the furniture is varnished, has a glossy finish or the paint is peeling and in poor condition, then sanding will be necessary, gently until the surface is smooth. Remember to sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid scratching it. If the furniture is in good condition, sanding will not be necessary.
Once sanded, it is time to apply a layer of wood primer. This layer will increase the adhesion of the paint and will also close the pores, preventing it from absorbing paint and leaving it uneven.
Once the primer has dried, sand the furniture with fine-grain paper and remove the dust with a damp cloth.
3.Let's get our hands on the brushes and start painting.
It is important to choose a paint suitable for wood and that is not too thick, in order to apply it correctly, once painted with a roller or brush. Once the paint is dry, a wax or varnish can be applied to protect the surface.
4. Choose a suitable brass sheet.
You can purchase brass coil or sheet of different thicknesses, we recommend that it be thin, from 0.1 to 0.6 millimeters, since the thinner it is, the easier it will be to manipulate.
Use a cutter to mark the shape you want to place on the furniture. We recommend covering drawers, alternate pieces of furniture or areas in poor condition with sheets.
We can glue the brass sheet to make it smooth, or create texture on it. An easy way to create texture is to use a template of a shape that we like. We place the template on top of the sheet and hit it so that the brass takes the shape of the template.
5. Stick the film to the furniture
To stick the sheet is very easy, simply pour a glue suitable for metal and wood on the sheet, and stick it on the furniture, pressing with your hands until it sticks.
We recommend placing an object on the film for a few hours to ensure it adheres properly.
And voila... A totally personalized and unique piece of furniture.
